About First Night Filmfest
Start with a strong, creative community - add some creativity and powerful film passion, and the result is Reel 2 Real - First Night Filmfest. Through the collaboration of First Night Spokane and North by Northwest, this fresh film festival challenges local film enthusiasts to be imaginative, innovative and always original.

The following rules apply to each participating group/production team:
- The “Official Filming Time Period” is Thursday, October 1st through Monday, November 2nd.
- The participating group/team must complete its film/video work in time to deliver it digitally by Monday, November 2nd at 12:00pm.
- Only works that meet the deadline will be officially part of the competition and considered an “Official Entry”. All films received before 12:00pm, Monday November 2nd will be screened and considered for entry.
B. During the “Official Filming Time Period, all creativity will take place, including but not limited to:
- Writing the script
- Costume/Set Design
- Sound Design
- Outputting to DVD.
C. The only work to begin prior to the "Official Filming Time Period" is:
- Organizing Crew
- Organizing Cast
- Securing Equipment
- Scouting/Securing Locations
D. All footage must be shot within the “Official Filming Time Period” of the project.
- No stock footage or footage shot or created at another time may be used.
- Animation and special effects are permitted, but must be created during the filming time period.
- Still photographs are permitted, provided that the team has the rights to them. The photos need to be created during the “Official Filming Time Period”.
E. Each participating team must have a representative attend the “First Night Film Festival Kickoff” which will take place at “Kress Gallery” at Riverpark Square,Thursday October 1st at 7:00pm. At the event, the required parameters, which must be used within each film, will be revealed. In order to be considered an official entry, all parameters must be used.
F. All cast and crew must be volunteers.
G. The finished film must be a minimum of 3 minutes in duration, and a maximum of 5 minutes in duration.
H. If you choose to include credits at the end of each film they are TO BE INCLUDED in the 5- minute length.
I. Any type of video or film camera may be used.
J. Music, Sound Recordings and Sound Effects: Sound recorders are allowed.
Copyrighted music cannot be used without written permission from the copyright holder. It is permissible for participating teams to use pre-recorded music; however teams must have the rights to any music used in its film and must provide a release for all music used. Please get written permission for the use of any music that your team didn’t create. (Music from local musicians, etc.) Royalty Free/Public Domain music is acceptable.
K. Your submitted video MUST INCLUDE the following information in the form of a 15 second slate. These 15 seconds will not be counted as part of your 5-minute maximum.

- Name of Film
- Total Running Time of the Film
L. Each team must secure talent, crew, music, releases and location releases, which must be turned into North By Northwest via snail mail. Release forms can be found on the First Night Spokane Film Festival website at http://www.firstnightfilmfest.com. Your film/video will not be screened before the First Night Filmfest organizers receive the signed releases.

M. To be eligible for the Project, entries must be the original work of the teams; must not infringe third-party's rights; must be suitable for publication (i.e., may not be obscene or indecent); must not contain obscene or pornographic material; may not contain defamatory statements about any person, company, organization or entity; may not invade privacy or other rights of any person, company or entity; may not in any other way violate applicable laws and regulations; and may not contain any copyrighted elements. Entries containing prohibited or inappropriate content as determined by North By Northwest and/or First Night Spokane, in their sole discretion, to be inappropriate will be disqualified. North By Northwest and First Night Spokane reserves the right to make the final determination as to which entries are eligible.
N. To be certified as an "Official Entry," each participating team's film/video production must follow all rules herein. The First Night Film Project Organizers reserve the right to screen only certified films.
O. North By Northwest and First Night Spokane may, in their sole discretion, disqualify entries deemed to be inappropriate or otherwise non-compliant.
P. All certified films are eligible to compete for the title of "First Night Judges Choice 2015" as well as various other awards; all of which will be determined by a panel of independent judges.
Q. All certified films are eligible to compete for the title of “First Night People’s Choice 2015” as voted on by public on Monday, December 31st at the First Night Spokane New Year’s Eve event.
R. All certified films are eligible to compete for the title of “First Night Facebook Choice 2015” as voted on by public likes during the period of December 1st – December 31st.
S. The First Night Film Project Organizers may add to or amend these rules at any time prior to the beginning of the filming time period.
